The Town of Davie is naming one of its streets after Roger Castillo, a Miami-Dade detective killed while on duty in January.
Last week, council members approved a plan to change the name of Lancelot Court to Roger Castillo Court.
In conjunction with the Hawkes Bluff homeowner’s association, town officials plan to hold a ceremony on Saturday, May 14th at 1pm to dedicate the new street and a memorial garden planned by the neighborhood.
Attendees are invited to participate by bringing a small butterfly garden plant with them the day of the dedication. The plant will become part of the late Detective Roger Castillo’s community memorial garden.
Castillo, 41, lived in Davie with his wife, Debbie, and three sons: Anthony, Michael, and Brian.
He and Miami-Dade Detective Amanda Haworth, of Miramar, were killed on January 20th while trying to arrest a murder suspect in Miami. They, along with two other members of a regional task force, had gone to a home to serve an arrest warrant on a murder suspect. Upon making contact with an occupant of the home, someone inside immediately opened fire, striking Detective Castillo and two other detectives. Detective Castillo succumbed to his wounds at the scene. The suspect was killed by a third officer during the shootout.
Castillo was a 21-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department.
In town documents, Detective Castillo is described as a "fallen hero" who, as a boy, had talked about becoming a police officer. He joined the Police Explorers as a teen. As a young officer, he worked hard to move through the ranks and eventually joined special squads like the warrants team, the town's resolution says.
