This is the time of year in the mountains of Georgia that people use to put in long hours in the family garden. Nothing can beat the taste and flavor of green beans picked from the field in the morning and prepared the same day for the evening meal. A few fresh tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and herbs makes the perfect salad. What could be more satisfying than knowing where dinner was grown, what type of fertilizer was used, how fresh the vegetables are and whether or not the seeds were altered?
For different reasons, some people are not able to grow their own vegetables. Sometimes, the land is not suitable for growing some of the vegetables that are wanted. This is why the Farmers Market in Blairsville, and the one in every county of Georgia, is so appreciated. The Blairsville Market will be having its first Annual Strawberry Jubilee on May 28, 2011. The Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. as it is every Friday and Saturday until mid-October.
Strawberries, grown right here in the mountains and surrounding areas of Georgia, and North and South Carolina, will be for sell. There will be strawberry plants and early crops available to purchase. Georgia mountain crafts will also be sold at the Farmers Market.
The atmosphere is one of family, friends, country get-together and early summer jubilee. The kids are playing while the ladies visit and share recipes and ideas. The men and young boys swap stories about trout-fishing and who grew the biggest fill-in-the-blank vegetable this year.
For natural health, fresh vegetables and meat from the local butcher is much healthier than foods imported from countries where there is little to no over-sight and no inspection of goods shipped. Processed foods are filled with dangerous chemicals and are making America obese. Read the labels on the foods purchased from grocery stores. Goggle the ingredients. Be prepared for a few sleepless nights.
