On a beautiful California day in April (when some of the U.S. was experiencing yet another polar vortex) Girl Scouts of all ages got to spend a fun day at Tanaka Farms in Irvine. Tanaka Farms is an authentic working organic farm right in the middle of a busy urban area. Their 30 acre farm produces fruits and vegetables that supply their produce stands and provides a wonderful place for their educational tours that they run year round. Depending on the time of year, you might be picking your own strawberries, watermelons, pumpkins, a myriad of different kinds of vegetables or even choosing your own Christmas Tree. They have cookout tours, wagon rides, ATV's for the kids, a corn maze, and a petting zoo. There is an event there for every holiday. I don't know of anywhere else in Orange County that you can do so many things in one place.

Since this was April - our Girl Scouts got the Strawberry Tour. We started out on a guided tour in a cool wagon pulled by a tractor. Our guide stopped in various areas of the farm and brought us different, just picked, vegetables to try. The girls loved the chance to try favorite veggies and some new ones too. Asking questions was encouraged and the girls all had great ones. The best part of the tour, I think, was that we got a glimpse into the workings of a real farm. We learned about what is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable (fruit have seeds) and we got to see how the farm is run and see the real farm equipment.

Even though I loved the educational part of it- I think the girls would have a different opinion. They really seemed to love tromping through the mud and picking their very own basket of strawberries, and of course eating some of them! The strawberries were sweet and wonderful and I got a basket to take home too!

Afterwards we got to shop for more fruits and veggies at the produce stand and I had a fresh made tamale too. What a great day!

I encourage anyone who wants to learn how a farm works, loves to eat fruit and veggies or just loves holiday family fun to go to Tanaka Farms. You can find something there year round for every member of the family.
