Brian Chankin, founder of Odd Obsession Movies in Bucktown, has found a fantastic venue for the debut showing of his collection of more than thirty rare, hand-painted Ghanian barbershop signs at Strange Beauty Show.

The African continent boasts a rich history of artists who have produced a significant body of hand-painted advertising artwork. Even during a time in which less expensive printing options exist, the expressive, personal touch of a one-of-a-kind piece remains prevalent.

The West African country of Ghana is particularly well-known for their exquisite, hand-painted barbershop signs. Key components of these works typically include the shop or stylist’s name and renderings of the latest men’s and women’s hairstyles. Always featured are tools of the trade found in a barbershop: scissors, combs, clippers, hair extensions, razors, and the hair product, “Sportin’ Waves,” a popular pomade in Ghana.

Accompanying the art exhibit, Rad Brian and Impala Sound spin an all-vinyl selection of Ghanian, Nigerian, and Jamaican tunes.

The exhibit will be on display at Strange Beauty Show through mid-March.

Strange Beauty Show’s February Art Event happens on Thursday, February 13th from 7:00PM -10:00PM at the salon, located at 1118 N. Ashland.
