Pope Francis' speech appealing for peace in the Ukraine was spoken with true compassion as to be expected from him. Common good gestures were in store as well, as the scheduled Peace Doves were gathered to be set free in flight for the thousands of spectators at St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican, Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014.
As the "Two white doves that were released by children standing alongside Pope Francis as a peace gesture have been attacked by other birds. As tens of thousands of people watched in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, a seagull and a large black crow swept down on the doves right after they were set free from an open window of the Apostolic Palace."
Both of the white Peace Doves were immediately attacked when released by Pope Francis and two children who assisted, as onlookers gasped as the feathers flew. One Dove was attacked by a large black and grey Crow while the other Dove was attacked by a Seagull who was persistent at tearing out the feathers of the unsuspecting creature of peace. This Dove broke free from the gull as the other Dove was being constantly pecked at by the crow. No one knows why the attack happened as many suspicions started to fly through the crowd.
"Pope Francis has called for "constructive dialogue" between Ukraine's authorities and its people, urging all to renounce violence in the upheaval convulsing their country." Prayers for peace have been a commonplace around the world as the number of recent deaths of anti - war protesters in the Ukraine rises.
No one is sure what happened to the Doves that took off in flight, hopefully they broke free from their oppressors as well. Hopefully temperatures will calm in the Ukraine as well.
