Stranded Cruise ship Triumph: A 'Carnival' freak show for passengers (Video)

Carnival's cruise ship Triumph beginning Sunday morning when a fire in the engine room knocked out the engines. According to a statement by Carnival, the fire was "fully extinguished" with "no casualties or injuries to guests or crew". The ship was left stagnating off Mexico's coast.

The fire left the ship with no propulsion and only emergency generator power.

The cruise ship left port from Galveston, Texas on Thursday, Feb 7, and was due back on Monday, Feb 11. Originally the cruise ship was to be towed to Progreso, Mexico. Since the fire Triumph has drifted over 90 miles bringing it just as close to Ala. as to Mexico. Tug boats are now planning on towing the cruise ship into Mobile, Ala. hopefully for it to arrive by Thursday.

This fun ship has turned into a vessel of trapped people on a cruise to nowhere.

Sunday night the Carnival ship Elation was able to drop off food and beverages to Triumph. Due to loss of power no there has been no hot food or hot water. The fire immediately left the passengers and crew without toilets and showers as well leaving people to use bags as if in the wilderness and then handing them over to the unfortunate crew members to dispose of. Social networking sites have reported from relatives and friends of passengers that some toilets and showers have since been jury-rigged to work.

Carnival has since sent their ship Legend to drop off more supplies. People aboard the stranded vessel only have cell phone service when the other ships are there. With no air conditioning the ship's indoors has become very hot leaving people camping out on the decks with mattresses pulled from rooms and makeshift tents crafted from bedding. The Coast Guard has been in contact with the crew since the fire and has sent a Coast Guard vessel to accompany Triumph.

Social networking sites are assisting in providing information from all sources.

Some Facebook posts by previous passengers of the Triumph have stated that there had been some ongoing engine problems during the last couple of months. Cruise critic has been posting updates on its Twitter page as well. People are updating about the stranded ship on Twitter at #Carnival Triumph.

Passengers were over capacity according to Carnival Triumph website.

Unfortunate circumstances do happen but could this one have been impacted more by the nearly 400 extra passengers taken on by Carnival for this cruise. Carnival Triumph's web page the ship has a 2,758 passenger capacity. With 3,143 passengers they where well over capacity. Could feeding and taking care of 396 additional passengers in an emergency situation added to the overall urgency and stress of the Triumph's ill-fated conditions.

Carnival has responded to the situation in regards to refunding the stranded guests.

Carnival has stated that "all guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund of the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges."
