A few months ago I was giving a LinkedIn workshop and someone asked "is it true that sometimes job postings aren't real jobs or aren't actual open positions?" I have been asked this question several times from job seekers and it’s a great question to ask.
It’s true that sometimes a company will post a position on their website or job boards and already have the candidate in place to fill that position. Why do they do that? Corporations and staffing companies are required to follow compliance programs which include job postings. Some companies are required to post their jobs externally even if they already have someone within the company filling that position. Some of the compliance programs require companies to interview a certain amount of people, making sure they are following EEO programs.
Unfortunately, there are times a job seeker is applying for a job or going on an interview with no chance of getting the opportunity to fill that position. It's frustrating and unfair to job seekers.
Real job postings: LinkedIn Groups has a tab called "career discussions" where recruiters and companies can post their jobs for free. As a recruiter, that's a huge benefit for me because I don't have to pay for posting a job to a much targeted group of people in the group. You can be sure that any job postings you find inside the LinkedIn groups are real jobs because we have to manually post the job in each group. I am pretty sure no one has time to waste posting jobs into individual groups if the jobs are not real openings.
If you are already on LinkedIn and in groups, be sure to check the career discussions section and see who's hiring. If you aren't on LinkedIn or aren't familiar with using groups, make sure to join some groups and do a search for job postings.
