Scott (Ryan Phillippe) is a man who has been unavailable to most everyone for most of his life. He's been in institutionalized. He's been on drugs. He doesn't even have a job.
Suddenly, his deceased mother begins talking to him and urges him to return to Shreveport, Louisiana, which he does.
He spends his last days living with Katherine (Anna Paquin) and her two children, Graycie (Ursula Parker) and Charles (Riley Thomas Stewart).
Katherine's husband William (Luke Wilson) is Scott's brother and he is never home.
Charles: They don't teach that to kids.
Katherine: I think it's time for you to leave.
Katherine: No drugs in my house.
Katherine: Things change. People change.
Katherine: You hurt everyone who's ever cared about you.
Scott: I lost a couple (of) days somewhere.
Scott: It's Vicodin. You want one?
Scott: Who doesn't think a crazy persons funny?
William: Things just haven't been good for awhile.
