Stoughton and Lawton advance to Olympic Trials Sunday

According to the Canadian Press, Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg and Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon have advanced to the 2013 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in Winnipeg from December 1-8 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

In a very strong defensive battle, Stoughton defeated Ontario's Glenn Howard 4-3. The game had four blank ends before Stoughton recorded a single point in the final end. Jon Mead, who plays third, led the Stoughton team by shooting 91%.

Lawton, meanwhile beat Team Jennifer Jones by a score of 6-4 to advance to the ladies' tournament. The Saskatchewan skip scored two key points in the third end to take control of the game.

The pressure was off for the Howard and Jones teams as they had already qualified for next year's trials. The men's and women's winners of the eight team tournament next year will represent Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
