In a nail-biting match at the US Open on Tuesday, Sam Stosur was taken down in the first round by newcomer Victoria Duval in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win. The two tennis players were battling it out on the court at Flushing Meadows for over two and a half hours, according to ESPN on Aug. 27.
The 17-year-old American is ranked 296 in the world and is playing in only her second Grand Slam match. Everyone expected Stosur, who is seeded number 11, to have an easy time making it into the second round. However, the young whippersnapper stunned both the Australian and tennis fans alike with her powerful hits cross court.
Victoria is a strong young lady that was born in Miami, Fla. She has had some adversities to overcome in her life so far. Her family was held at gun point during a robbery when they were living in Haiti. Victoria was only seven at the time. They all thankfully survived the terrifying ordeal. Her mother took the three kids back to Florida, leaving their dad behind. Her parents are both physicians.
In 2010, the Haitian earthquake happened and Mr. Duval ended up buried under the rubble. He dug himself out and survived.
With all of that in her young life, the teenager is excited to have made it this far and will continue her US Open challenge in the second round. She has also had the support and mentoring of tennis great Billie Jean King.
How far do you think Victoria Duval will go in the 2013 US Open?
