In a video that can only be described as horrific, a stroller holding a six-month old baby rolls off a train platform onto the tracks of an oncoming train. Just seconds later, the train rolls right over it. Miraculously, the baby survived with only minor cuts and bruises. The video, while tough to watch, teaches all parents an important lesson on stroller safety.
Stroller companies are constantly introducing new features to protect children even more. All strollers now have locks, usually on all wheels, as well as harnesses to keep the baby secured. However as most parents know, it is easy to forgot to use these features every single time.
In the video, the child's mother is seen pulling the stroller away from the tracks as if to protect it. She also pulls down the shade and tucks the baby in. However her one mistake of not locking the wheels almost cost her baby's life. The stroller slowly rolls towards the tracks while the mom is not looking. When she finally sees it rolling away, it is too late to catch it. The stroller, and child, were dragged about 33 yards before the train stopped. The stroller was caught in the tracks in a way that protected the child. Furthermore, the fact that the child was strapped in may have saved his life.
While we don't like to think about the 'what ifs' in life, this video shines a light onto some important stroller safety issues. Parents are advised to always use the stroller harness. This is a must no matter the age of the child. Secondly, wheel locks are needed to protect situations like this one. This could easily happen in a parking lot or sidewalk when parents are looking.
Strollers aren't the only place this can happen. It could be when children are in shopping carts as well. Always use the harness provided, and consider loading your groceries in the car only after your child is safely inside. The cart can easily roll away while you are loading things in the car.
This video may be most disturbing because as parents, we can envision this happening to ourselves. Remember to always use the safety equipment provided to protect this from happening to you.
