Stork Craft crib recall: models, details and information

Ensure babies have a safe sleeping environment
sean_mcgee

Over 2.1 million drop-side cribs manufactured by Stork Craft have been recalled after over 110 incidents in which the drop side of the crib detached from the crib. Four of those incidents resulted in the death of a child, including a 7-month old baby from New Iberia, Louisiana who was caught in the crib and suffocated.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Committee (CPSC) and Health Canada jointly announced the recall on November 23, 2009. The release detailing the recall also includes photographs and illustrated details of the exact danger posed by the recalled Stork Craft cribs.

All Stork Craft brand drop-side cribs manufactured and distributed between January 1993 and October 2009 are involved in this recall.

Also involved are some Stork Craft cribs manufactured with the Fisher-Price logo. These cribs were manufactured between October 1997 and December 2004 and can be identified by the Stork Craft logo on the crib’s teething rail, manufacturer’s instructions, assembly instruction, and on the end panels of some models.

Consumers who own any of the recalled cribs can order a free repair kit from the Stork Craft website to repair the cribs and bracket the drop-side to convert it into a fixed-side crib, although the company has indicated that it is having trouble keeping up with orders for the kits and consumers have been reporting difficulty accessing the website.

The CPSC recommends that parents find other sleeping accommodations for their children while waiting on the free repair kit, since these cribs can be extremely dangerous. See this "Safe sleeping options" article for some suggestions on safe temporary sleeping arrangements.

Anyone who has had a problem with these cribs is encouraged to report it to the CPSC, since they are still taking incident and injury reports on these cribs. Reporting problems can help lead to better safety regulations in the future.

I have a recalled crib and am having trouble getting through for my replacement parts. My suggestion is to turn your crib around so that the drop side is to the wall, this way your child can't get hurt. Yes, you will have to bend down to get your child now (since the side won't come down)... but what's worse?

    Here's what I found:
In a letter posted to customers at the company's blog (storkcraft.blogspot.com), Stork Craft manager Adam Segal said the company is currently "working through the initial surge of inquiries and requests at the moment" and their website is experiencing heavy traffic.

They suggest emailing parts@storkcraft.com with the following information, all of which can be found on the bottom right corner of the mattress baseboard: model number of the crib, date of manufacture and country of manufacture. The company also asks parents to include complete shipping information in order to receive a free repair kit that will modify the cribs so the sides are fixed.

I have tried calling the past 2 days numerous times and I am unable to get through. I tried to go online and order a repair kit and your website is down. This is incredibly frustrating! I would appreciate someone to email me so I can give them my adress to send me a repair kit, once again this whole process is VERY frustrating and I am anxiously awaiting a reply. My email is natalie.james@scotiabank.com

Well, I have been trying for days to not only log on to the website to get the kit, but have been calling and can't connect. Looks like Im going to be taking the crib down and putting it in the dump, obviously thats where this product belongs, talk about unsatisfied customers, Im in the same boat as a lot of other parents. I guess the new crib I have to buy will not be a storkcraft nor will it have an adjustable rail. Its too bad, since they don't give the cribs away I think I have the right to say I don't feel like a valued customer.....

The panic associated with this recall is unnecessary. Get the crib fixed, yes, but there have only been four deaths connected to two million cribs sold over a decade! That's pretty low risk, and it looks like the deaths were young infants, who should probably be sleeping in bassinets anyway, not a crib. We have used a Storkcraft crib for both our kids and it has been great. We did have trouble with the drop-down side – as a toddler my daughter reefed on it until the plastic clip holding it in broke, making it easy for the side to pop off one of the rails. One morning she was shaking the side and it popped off the rail, and she fell out through the gap at the bottom. She was fine, and came to find me, which was quite a surprise. We turned the crib around so the drop-down side faced the wall until a replacement part from Storkcraft arrived. There have been no problems since, and it's almost time to convert it into a toddler bed for my son. A great, durable product overall.

I have a recalled crib and i IMMEDIATELY returned it. This is the second recall in a year. That is too much and totally inappropriate. The response from this business is also disgusting. I understand that everybody is trying to call in, but they need to be ready and have enough staff and personnel available to deal with this issue. I will be staying away from StorkCraft cribs from now on

I am sooooo very upset about this! First of all...my heart goes out to the parents of these children lost by such an unfortunate and obviously careless manufacturing defect! These products should go through extensive testing before they are sold. Obviously they aren't or these deaths would not have occurred. Secondly, I have one of these cribs and I am going to throw it away because I don't feel it should be up to me to repair a crib I purchased thinking it was safe for my child. I know that no amount of money will ever fill the void that is left from the loss of those children's lives but I hope damn well that the company compensates these 'victims' well enough. Too many companies get away with selling poorly made items. Quantity overrides quality these days and frankly it makes me sick.

Also, Storkcraft should allow all consumers that have one of these cribs to return it for a full refund of the purchase price!

I think People are right to be worried but on the same note gettign a litttle harsh twards the company, Im sure when they were making the cribs they were not intending for this to happen, and 4 outta 2 million over a 10 yr perios well you have a better chance on being hit by a car or even winning the lottery.. just turn your side rails to the wall until your repair kit arrives.. Dont get me wrong i do feel very deep sympathy for the families who lost children but lets not all drive ourselves crazy over this

  • diane 2 years ago

all stores like target and walmart are taking the recalled cribs back for refund with no box or reciept.

I purchased one of these recalled models in 1996, and it has worked beautifully for my two children, and three of my friends kids. It is still in VERY good condition. It is a shame regarding the fatalities of the little infants involved in the accidents. However, the units are well built. Everything can be inproved upon over time, it is our human nature to fix issues and continually improve.
