Stop praying for President Obama, part 1

Just the other day, I sat in a room full of conservative Christians who were praying for President Obama. One would think that that would have been a good thing. But sadly it was not. Toward the end of their prayer I wanted to scream, STOP! I wanted them to stop praying because their prayers were clearly being prayed under duress.

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. I Timothy 2:1-4.

Quoting First Timothy 2:1-4 as the motivation for their prayer for our president, these Christians prayed a prayer that sounded more like a child’s forced apology when they were really not sorry for anything. This prayer for our president was laced with self-righteousness and disdain for a Christian man who is clearly in need of prayer. It was obvious that none who prayed that morning had any agape love or even respect for the president of the United States. Yet they prayed... What I witnessed that day was venom being spewed in Jesus’ name. Former Democratic president, Bill Clinton was bedding ladies like a rock star yet he was never vilified by conservative Christians the way they are skewering President Obama. Let me be clear, I do not believe that most opponents of Barack Obama are racist, however far too many of them are. They would deny it I am sure, but the Holy Spirit cannot lie.

When the leader of this group of praying conservatives told the world just a few days ago that he would support a non-Christian who is most qualified, beyond anything else, I wondered if beyond anything else included beyond being a Christian. What an ominous day in the kingdom of God, when a Christian leader can justify supporting a non-Christian because he shares their same political beliefs, but who obviously does not share the same the biblical beliefs. For those of you who do not know, Mormons believe that God the Father had physical sex with Mary the mother of Jesus. And if that were not enough Mormons do not believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. That’s enough for me. But I guess these Republican Christians have already ascended to the Mormon status of “god” and can now place politics above righteousness.
