Stone Sour today announced a 2014 winter tour, and San Antonians will get the chance to see if they indeed were saved as the best for last.
Stone Sour, featuring two members of Slipknot in vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root, kick off their winter U.S. trek Jan. 14 in Orlando, Fla., and conclude the announced dates Sat. Feb. 15 here at Backstage Live with special guest Pop Evil. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday (Dec. 6) at frontgatetickets.com. Stone Sour's tour schedule can be found here.
Stone Sour, which also includes guitarist Josh Rand and drummer Roy Mayorga, released double concept album House of Gold And Bones: Part 1 and 2 in October 2012 and this past April, respectively. The concert will mark the group's first performance here since April 8, 2011, when it headlined the Alamodome's Illusions Theater on the Avalanche tour.
That concert yielded an emotional performance of "Bother" by Taylor, who acknowledged that it would've been the birthday of late Slipknot bassist Paul Gray (read the SAMME's coverage below at the "Suggested" links in blue). Prior to that, the boys from Iowa hadn't played San Antonio since March 2007 at Sunset Station. Click here for the SAMME's video interview with Mayorga from the Uproar festival on Sept. 11, 2010. Stone Sour is still searching for a permanent bassist to replace Shawn Economaki.
Pop Evil, from Michigan, has latched onto some big tours when visiting San Antonio in the past. They opened for Judas Priest in the summer of 2009 and hooked up with Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, Trivium, God Forbid, Emmure and Battlecross for the Trespass America festival in the summer of 2012. Pop Evil released Onyx this past May. Click here for coverage of that show and here to watch the SAMME's footage of "Last Man Standing" from Freeman Coliseum.
