Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) has shipped out their incredibly fresh Stone Enjoy By 05.16.14 IPA and I am happy to report that Alabama is one of six limited markets selected to receive this batch.
The Stone Enjoy By IPA program was started by the brewery in late 2012 and has proven to be a groundbreaking approach to ensure freshness and quality for hop lovers nationwide. This has been achieved by having each batch of this beer bottled with a label that clearly incorporates and displays the "Enjoy By" date, precisely 35 days after bottling. This method removes any confusion from the equation by simply depicting the time frame one has to consume the beer in its optimal condition. To further guarantee freshness, if any Stone Enjoy By 05.16.14 IPA happens to remain on shelves on May 17, Stone Brewing will have the beer pulled immediately.
As for the beer itself, Stone Enjoy By 05.16.14 IPA is brewed with the following list of 13 hops: Ahtanum, Super Galena, Simcoe, Amarillo, Delta, Target, Calypso, Cascade, Citra, Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Helga. This massive hop bill creates notes of peaches and tropical fruit on the nose, and a dank hop flavor that pushes through the smooth malt presence. Stone Enjoy By 05.16.14 IPA is available now in 22 oz. bombers and on draft, and it can only be found in Alabama, California (Northern & Southern), Oregon, South Carolina and Puerto Rico. Alchemy Tavern (Mobile), Hop City Birmingham, Liquor Express (Huntsville) and Wish You Were Beer (Madison) have all reported on social media that they currently have this beer available in bottles or on draft (availability subject to change).
If you would like to continue to see Stone Enjoy By IPA in Alabama, Stone Brewing is giving fans the power to choose where the next batch will end up. Your voice can be heard through Twitter or Instagram by using the hashtag #EnjoyBy [your 5 digit zip code] or by checking in on Untappd and adding your zip code somewhere in the notes. You can also visit the Stone Enjoy By IPA website to vote once a day per device with your zip code. The folks at Stone Brewing Co. guarantee that future batches of this beer will go to the areas that are the most vocal. With that said, get your bottles of Stone Enjoy By 05.16.14 IPA whenever you see them, enjoy them fresh, and make sure to send out those hashtags so that we can continue to see future releases of this hoppy treat in Alabama. Prost!
Personal Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Vibrant golden, almost apple juice-like in color. Incredibly clear. Finger of bright white head that leaves behind some chunky lacing after each sip.
Aroma: Tropical fruit, big time. Pineapple, grapefruit, coconut and a bit of peach. Absolutely dank with a touch of malt sweetness behind it all.
Taste: The hops shine of course with all of that tropical fruit. Intense notes of grapefruit, pineapple and mango. The malt is far from sticky sweet but it certainly provides some balance by softening the hops a bit.
Mouthfeel: Medium in feel and carbonation. Hop bitterness does attack the palate in the best possible way at first, but the malt clears that out enough to keep this beer incredibly easy drinking. Has a lingering hoppiness that dries up nicely. ABV brings a slight bit of warmth on the throat.
