Every year, as the calendar approaches opening day for the San Diego Padres, new things start popping up in the East Village. As groundskeepers meticulously create a beautiful playing surface inside the stadium, businesses are also hard at work creating a pre-and-postgame playground on the outside of the stadium. One of the more exciting arrivals to the Petco Park vicinity is Stone Brewing’s East Village Taproom, which opened for business on Tuesday.
Housed in the Simon Levi building, the new Stone Brewing Taproom is in the space formerly occupied by Wine Steals. The 1,500-square-foot taproom features plenty of the ambience recognizable to regulars at Stone Brewing Company’s other locations. Wood, metal and stone accents create an environment that couldn’t be confused with any other restaurant, and that’s just the way that Stone wants it.
The star of the show at any Stone Brewing Company location is the beer, and the new taproom has 16 taps pouring plenty of Stone’s latest offerings. For those wanting a pregame bite, flatbread pizzas made with ingredients from Stone Farms are available, because what better combination is there than beer and pizza? Some of the more notable offerings include a Thai curry chicken flatbread with cashews and caramelized onions, and a twice-baked potato flatbread with garlic mashed potatoes and bacon. As with every Stone restaurant, the menu includes a pairing with every flatbread so you can get the ultimate beer and food pairing experience.
Before Tuesday’s opening, Stone hosted a preview “Hoppy Hour,” to show off the new digs. Local luminaries like Mayor Kevin Faulconer and City Council President Todd Gloria used this opportunity to stop by and wish Stone well. “I know how important the craft beer industry is to the city of San Diego,” said Faulconer. “We’re on the map for all of the right reasons in the craft beer industry.”
Stone’s new taproom isn’t their only project in the East Village. Stone Brewing Co. at Petco Park opens on March 30 for the first Padres home game. Located on the fifth floor of Petco Park between sections 307 and 309, the 4,800-square-foot location will feature 12 taps of Stone beer and merchandise for sale. Accompanying food offerings will be available in the future, but not in time for opening day.
