Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, California) released Stone Coffee Milk Stout, the brewery's latest limited offering, in select markets earlier this week.
Originally named Gallagher’s After Dinner Stout, Stone Coffee Milk Stout came from humble beginnings by way of the 10-barrel pilot system at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station. Brewery Trainer Brian Gallagher brewed up this old homebrew recipe of his with Brewing Manager Kris Ketcham as a one-off, limited-release offering, but this tasty stout quickly got the attention of Brewmaster Mitch Steele and company Co-founders Greg Koch and Steve Wagner. The beer was a hit with the Stone Brewing team, and it was eventually decided to brew up a limited batch for distribution so that they could share Stone Coffee Milk Stout with craft beer fans around the country.
“Brian did a wonderful job developing this recipe and was able to artfully overcome the challenge of brewing a low-alcohol beer without it tasting too thin or watery,” explains Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele. “Because of the positive response from Team Stone and those lucky enough to taste the small-batch brew, we decided to brew it on our 120-barrel system and make it more widely available for craft beer enthusiasts across the country.”
Stone Coffee Milk Stout gets its mild coffee flavors thanks to the use of whole coffee beans from San Diego-based artisanal roaster Ryan Bros. Coffee. Lactose sugar is also added to provide the beer with a full body, silky mouthfeel, and a delightful creaminess to complement those coffee notes. Mild ale malt and other specialty grains lend the beer notes of roast and cocoa, and Magnum hops brighten the beer a bit with contrasting, clean bitterness. The final product is a 4.2% ABV, easy-drinking stout that still retains the robust characteristics of the style.
Stone Coffee Milk Stout is available now in Alabama and in select markets nationwide. You can track this one down on draft and in six-packs of 12 oz. bottles at craft beer-friendly establishments who normally carry offerings from Stone Brewing Co. in the state. Keep in mind that this is a limited offering that will only be available during the summer and fall months, so get it while you can. Prost!
