Stolen gas meter results in natural gas leak in Cedartown, College Drive area

A natural gas leak in the area of College Drive has shut down traffic. People should avoid the area so that emergency crews can keep the situation under control until Atlanta Gas Light arrives on the scene. Cedartown police and Cedartown Fire are on the scene.

Polk County Emergency 911 received a call from a nearby resident around 7:30 this morning. The caller reported a very strong smell of gas in the area.

Cedartown police arrived within a couple minutes and reported back to 911 that they could hear a loud hissing. Upon further investigation, the officer observed that someone had removed/stolen the gas meter from a residence located on College  Drive.

Atlanta Gas Light company was contacted by Polk County 911 and a representative for the company stated that the estimated time of arrival is anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. That estimated time of arrival was given at 7:34 a.m., meaning that it could possibly take until 8:30 a.m. for an Atlanta  Gas Light employee to arrive on the scene. At that time, Gas will be shut off to the residence while a new meter is installed.
