A seven-year-old gray and white Appaloosa named Odie was reunited with his family on July 4th - granting the grateful family another reason to celebrate the holiday. Their horse had been stolen on Wednesday from Sassy Stables in Woodruff, South Carolina.

The horse had been in a locked fenced area. His halter and lead were also missing.

On Friday, Harold and Debi Metcalfe from Stolen Horse International popularly known as recovered the owner's horse about 15 miles away in Gray Court, S.C. Odie had been allegedly sold to the person. The Metcalfes' were able to make a positive identification because the horse had been microchipped and registered.

"Thanks to the speed of the internet, NetPosse can round up a modern day version of a posse within minutes of filing a report. An alert and call to action goes out to a network of organizations, individuals, businesses, law enforcement and recovery specialists bent on returning your lost equine or property," states the nonprofit, volunteer organization.

The organization was established in 1998 after the theft and recovery of Idaho, a spotted racking horse mare, owned by Harold and Debi Metcalfe. Their horse was recovered one year later.

Odie is currently being treated at the Tryon Equine Hospital. When found, the horse was extremely dehydrated, and has leg injuries from harsh riding.

The owner of Sassy Stables wants every horse owner to heed some practical and very inexpensive advice that helped Odie to get back to his owner so quickly:

"But I can tell you, PLEASE microchip your animals! That is the ONLY way you are guaranteed to get them home! If Odie wasn't micro chipped, we wouldn't have been able to get him so quickly. This is the best way to protect your animals!"
