Stocking your hussif

Why have plastic when you can have personalized?

Previously, we discussed how to make a Hussif, that lovely portable sewing kit. Now that it is complete and personalized, let's stock it!

Stocking it is a matter of personal preference. If you are using it for repairs, and on-the run use, here are a few things that you should have:

  • a needle sheath with several needles of various sizes
  • a small pair of sewing snips
  • a measuring tape
  • a small case of straight pins
  • several buttons of various sizes
  • thread in a few colors: black, light brown, dark brown, navy, white, and red. Clear fishing-type thread might be a good option as well.
  • a stitch ripper
  • marking chalk

If you are using it for a special project, you will need some very specific things:

  • a swatch of the fabric(s) you are using
  • matching thread
  • straight pins
  • tailor's marking chalk
  • a measuring tape
  • safety pins
  • needles in necessary sizes
  • a stitch ripper

Any fabric store will carry these things, and these are just the bare minimums. Add as much or as little as you like or need. Happy sewing!
