Stockholm: Dinner and Drinks on Ice

A couple of the coolest things to do in Stockholm are enjoy a gourmet meal served on ice dishes, followed by wintery cocktails next door in the Icebar, both inside the Nordic Sea Hotel.

The Icebar

At the Icebar, you'll don gloves and a parka, then enter a temperature controlled chamber. Once the outer door closes, the inner one opens and you’ll find yourself inside a glowing world of ice. The walls are lit from within and slowly change colors, reminiscent of the Northern Lights. There are ice tables and ice chairs, and plenty of sculpted embellishments for photo ops, like reindeer wall carvings you can pop your head into.

This fancy bar is cooled to -5 degrees Celsius, and serves up nordic themed drinks in ice glasses like "Husky Sledge”, which combines Absolut Vanilla with the flavors of cinnamon and apple or "Northern Light" which features Absolut Raspberry, creme de cassis, lime and raspberry.

The Ice Menu

At the hotel’s restaurant you can try the Ice Menu, which features set dishes inspired by the flavors of Jukkasjärvi in Swedish Lapland, served on plates and bowls made of pure ice from the Torne river in Northern Sweden!

The meal begins with smoked wild duck, served with mountain cheese and sea buckthorn sherbet adorned with chives, all brought out on a plate of steaming cold ice.

The palate cleanser is as fancy as they get: brie wrapped in a lightly caramelized Swedish pancake accompanied by sweet lingonberry lemonade, glowing bright magenta inside a carved ice glass that melts a bit every time your lips touch it.

This is followed by roe deer top-round steak accompanied by a chanterelle dumpling, smoked pork, candied chestnuts, gravy with soft whey butter and pickled root vegetables, with a side of chilled lingonberries piled into an ice dish. The nutty chestnuts go great with the sweet dark meat sauce, mingling bitter flavors with sweet and buttery ones.

For dessert it's almond-encrusted rose-hip cheesecake with milk chocolate ice cream.

Located right next to the central train station, this is an exceptionally unique experience that shouldn't be missed. It just doesn't get much cooler than eating fancy Swedish cuisine off frosty ice dishes!
