Tyler Melling (1-0) and two relievers combined to shut down to the Kentucky Wildcats (0-3), holding them to a single run on five hits, giving Miami (1-2) a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon in the final game of the College of Charleston Invitational. Melling pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out six and walking one. Matt Rosinski allowed two hits in one shutout inning, while Sam Dawes pitched the last two innings for his first save of the year, allowing one hit, a walk and striking out two.
Third baseman Brad Gschwind put Miami on the board first with a leadoff single in the top of the third inning. He moved to second on a sac bunt and to third on a groundout before coming home on a single by second baseman Jon Edgington.
The Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff triple followed by a wild pitch by Melling.
The 'Hawks retook the lead in the seventh inning. First baseman Kyle Weldon led off the inning with a walk and then moved to second on a sac bunt before scoring on a single by shortstop Ryan Kaup. Then they added an insurance run in the eighth. Right fielder Ryan Curl led off with a walk, and moved to third base on a single by center fielder Ryan Brenner. After a strikeout, Brenner stole second and left fielder Bryce Redeker was intentionally walked to load the bases. Another strikeout was the second out of the inning, but then Curl finally came home on a wild pitch. However, a third strikeout ended the inning before another run could be plated.
With the College of Charleston Invitational in the rearview mirror now, the 'Hawks will prepare for their next tournament. Their next destination is Wilmington, North Carolina for the Hughes Bros. Challenge. They will play West Virginia (2-1), UNC-Wilmington (1-2) and Marist (1-2) in the three-day tournament.
