WCW and TNA legend Steve “Sting” Borden was announced as an exclusive pre-order character for 2K Sports’ upcoming wrestling game “WWE 2K15” during this week's Monday Night RAW telecast.
Sting, a former WCW, NWA and TNA World Heavyweight Champion, as well as WCW Tag Team, Television and United States Champion has never wrestled for the WWE, but was reportedly signed to a WWE Legends contract by the company a few months ago, to help facilitate the branding of WCW material on the new WWE Network. Dubbed “The Franchise” during his tenure in WCW, Sting is the last of former WCW stars to never wrestle in the WWE. After years of speculation, it now appears that “The Stinger,” at the very least, will officially appear in a WWE video game.
“The only thing for sure about Sting is nothing’s for sure, except my debut in WWE 2K15,” said Sting in a press release by 2K on Tuesday. “I’m honored to have my legacy immortalized in a video game. It’s showtime!”
The news was unexpected, despite the fact that Sting tweeted 7-14-14 on his Twitter page last week. Despite his legendary status in the world of wrestling, the last game Sting appeared in on a home console was Midway’s TNA Impact in 2008 on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.
Last year, Sting's former tag team partner, the late-Ultimate Warrior was the pre-order exclusive character for "WWE 2K14."
With the announcement, Sting joins the already confirmed John Cena, who will appear on the game’s cover, Darren Young, Hulk Hogan, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt and Antonio Cesaro as a part of the game's roster.
“We’re eager to introduce fans to Sting in a compelling new way, while debuting the next-generation of gaming in the WWE 2K franchise,” Chris Snyder, Vice President of Marketing at 2K said in a press release obtained by Examiner on Tuesday morning. “Pre-ordering WWE 2K15 is the ultimate way to embrace the history and individuality of Sting’s impressive career.”
“WWE 2K15” is set for a October 28 release in North America and will ship on October 31 internationally.
