Stevie Nicks fans can check out an audio clip for a new song titled "Mabel Normand." The track is the Fleetwood Mac star's latest preview offering from her upcoming solo album titled, 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault.
The two-time Grammy winner posted the teaser clip on Aug. 15 at her official Facebook page. The mid-tempo rocker sounds like a winner with its retro late 70s - early 80s sound, propelled by a catchy electric guitar riff and an acoustic rhythm guitar, highlighting Nick's dark lyrics and trademark emotionally delivered vocal rasp. "Mabel Normand" is an original composition, which the pop diva turned into a demo in the mid-80s that never made it to an album.
The song’s title and beginning are inspired by the life of the silent film era comedienne and actress, whose screen career was tarnished by a number of scandals, contributing to her early death at the age of 37. Nick's lyrics touch on the pain behind the troubled comic's screen image, singing, "No comedienne lives her life as a clown. But her heart was quietly crying. I guess she even felt guilty ’bout even dying. Poor Mabel Normand." The lyrics take on added timely emotional power from the recent tragic death by suicide of actor/comedian Robin Williams.
The diminutive songstress' rearranged and re-recorded the original "Mabel Normand" demo in the studio and has included it among 14 songs on "24 Karat Gold." The album is a collection of self-penned songs, which the Nicks recorded over the years, but never released on an album. Co-produced by Nicks along with ex-Eurythmics co-frontman Dave Stewart and longtime Nick's bandmember and session guitarist Waddy Wachtel, the tracks were newly recorded in Nashville and mixed in Los Angeles.
Nicks previously previewed two other tracks from the album earlier this month, including "The Dealer" and "If You were My Love." 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault is available for pre-order and will be released Oct. 7 on the Reprise label. Click here for more information.
Nicks will hit the road this fall with the reunited Fleetwood Mac classic line-up, which will include the return of long absent Mac star Christine McVie. The tour kicks off the tour in on Sept. 20 in Minneapolis, Minneapolis, at Target Centre and wrap up in on Dec. 14 in Dallas, Texas, at American Airlines Centre. For more information, click here.
