Equestrian and horse film lovers may eagerly await War Horse, an upcoming film from Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Studios.
Academy Award winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg (DreamWorks Studios) has acquired the film rights for War Horse, a 1982 novel by Michael Morpugno. Steven Spielberg has commissioned playwright and screenwriter Lee Hall (Billy Elliott, Cooking with Elvis and The Wind in the Willows) to write the screenplay, based on the novel.
War Horse is the story of a young English boy and his farm horse, a bay thoroughbred. In the novel, the story is narrated by Joey, the horse. Albert, who has owned and trained Joey since he was a foal, is saddened when his father sells the horse to the British cavalry. Joey relates the drama and dangers of World War I in gritty detail.

“From the moment I read Michael Morpugno’s War Horse, I knew this was a film I wanted DreamWorks to make," Steven Spielberg said. "Its heart and its message provide a story that can be felt in every country."
A few years ago, playwright Nick Stafford adapted War Horse into a stage play, which opened in London in October 2007. War Horse (the play) is slated for a Broadway opening in 2010.
Steven Spielberg’s earlier films have included Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Color Purple, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Letters from Iwo Jima, Munich, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, War of the Worlds and the Indiana Jones series.
Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Studios have not announced a production schedule, casting roster or projected release date for the War Horse movie.
