Academy Award winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg (Dream Works Studios) is set to begin filming his upcoming World War II epic, War Horse, aiming for an August 2011 cinematic release.
War Horse, based on a 1982 novel (of the same title) by Michael Morpugo, has already become a popular theatrical production (adapted by playwright Nick Stafford), playing both in London and on Broadway in the United States.
The live theater production of War Horse employs life-sized equine puppets on stage.
Steven Spielberg has commissioned writers Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and Lee Hall (Billy Elliott, Cooking with Elvis and The Wind in the Willows) to write the screenplay for War Horse, based on the novel.
War Horse is the story of a young English boy and his farm horse, a bay thoroughbred. In the War Horse novel, the story is narrated by Joey, the horse. Albert, who has owned and trained Joey since he was a foal, is saddened when his father sells the horse to the British cavalry. The horse is later apprehended by the Germans.
Joey (the horse) relates the drama and dangers of World War I in gritty detail in War Horse.

“From the moment I read Michael Morpugno’s War Horse, I knew this was a film I wanted DreamWorks to make," Steven Spielberg said. "Its heart and its message provide a story that can be felt in every country."
Steven Spielberg already has another film project underway, The Adventures of Tin Tin: The Secret of the Unicorn (slated for a December 2011 release).
Steven Spielberg’s earlier films have included Band of Brothers, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Color Purple, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Letters from Iwo Jima, Munich, The Pacific, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, War of the Worlds and the Indiana Jones series.
