Steven Spielberg has inched closer in agreeing to helm a remake of “The Ten Commandments” for Warner Bros.
The studio, which has wanted the former CSULB student to direct the remake since last September after he looked over the script, plans to guide the project in a new direction.
For those who expect a Charlton Heston-esque Moses in the remake, think again. The humble portrayal of the man in the 1956 epic will be replaced by a warrior in the remake.
The film, with the working title “Gods and Kings,” will be "like a ‘Braveheart’-ish version of the Moses story,” an insider confirmed to Deadline.
The remake will tell Moses’s life story from beginning to end including his “coming down the river, being adopted, leaving his home, forming an army and getting the Ten Commandments,” the insider said.
Also different in the remake is the decision to shoot the film without the use of 3D. Instead of planning to impress the audience with stunning visual effects that the Cecille B. DeMille-directed film is partly known for, Warner Bros. wishes to focus on the essence of a warrior, much like Spielberg’s war film “Saving Private Ryan” portrays.
The studio wants to begin production for the remake in the spring next year, according to Deadline.
In the meantime, Spielberg wrapped up the biopic “Lincoln," has moved on to an upcoming futuristic sci-fi film “Robopocalypse” and has recently earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture for his film "War Horse." However, given his ability to juggle multiple projects at once, Spielberg is likely to take on the epic remake of "The Ten Commandments."
