The close of 2013 has got me thinking of endings – PC game endings in particular. Here records my top three favorite computer game endings of all time!

#3: Hitman: Blood Money

Agent 47 is dead – or so you think! But then Diana, 47’s only liaison to the International Contract Agency, attends his funeral and gives him a kiss – a kiss laced with the antidote to a paralyzing drug that makes him appear dead. 47 wakes up, grabs his guns, and kills everyone at the funeral (minus Diana of course), proving once again that you can always count on Diana’s loyalty.

#2: Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

Before the game came out in 2010, we learned that Blizzard was going to split the Terran, Zerg, and Protoss campaigns into three different games. This caused a lot of outrage because many reviewers thought Wings of Liberty would either end on a cliffhanger or have an ending with a lot of loose strings. Wings of Liberty blew that expectation away completely! Although the question running in the back of our minds was, “what are they going to do with Kerrigan now?” Blizzard could have still, with great ease, ended the Starcraft II series on that high note, with Raynor carrying his love into the sunset, having gone through hell to bring her back.

#1: World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (Lich King Fight)

The fight with the Lich King at the end of WoW’s second expansion was one of the most anticipated confrontations in the franchise’s history, and one of the most well received. Finally there was an ending to the epic, tragic saga of Arthas’s fall from grace and rise to power as the leader of the undead horde. I personally didn’t get to fight the Lich King during the second expansion, but I did get to fight him in the next - for an achievement and title, but also to find out what all the fuss was about. Probably the best part of this fight is (ironically) when Arthas kills the entire raid. But, as many of my readers might remember, this seeming raid wipe is actually just part of the scripted fight, as Tirion Fordring gathers strength from the Light and resurrects everyone, who then help him bring down the Lich King once and for all (or until the next raid night)! It’s an epic ending to an epic villain in a more-than-epic storyline.
