Steve Perry of Journey, where art thou?
The new TV show called Glee (and the American Idol tour) has sparked searches for "Steve Perry of Journey" anew -- and reports say Steve Perry has been very generous about licensing his music for the show.
Rumors are circulating that Steve Perry from the famous Journey band may make an appearance on the show.
Indeed, when this episode of Glee at minute 20 played Steve Perry's famous "nah nah nah nah" chorus on the Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' song during a scene where a Glee character discovers his singing voice as a young boy -- from a man who leaves the boy's mother for a blonde girl at the Pick and Save -- searches from young viewers ensued, asking Google "Who sings that song?"
Steve Perry of Journey, Please Come to Glee
Fans of the highly-recognizable, top-favorite voice that grew to a crescendo in the '80s, enhanced by heartfelt lyrics like "He took the midnight train going anywhere..." really miss the original Steve Perry of Journey.
The Steve Perry online website reports that Perry is "happily enjoying his retirement" and gives links to the latest news about the
And yet.
Fans are still waiting with open arms for the voice that can never be replicated by Journey tribute bands.
Indeed, 40-year-olds (like this reporter) who experienced the magic that is the crooning wail of Steve Perry's Journey singing of his beloved "city by the bay" as the soundtrack to our high school years will not stop believing that we will hear that voice again, perhaps fronting for Journey once more.
Alas, Wikipedia quotes Steve Perry's 2001 VH1 Behind the Music statement as saying he never really felt like he was a part of the band Journey.
So maybe dreams of hearing Steve Perry intoning the finger-wagging, revengeful yet happy "Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah" again live in front of his Journey band are as slim as Jodi Watley reuniting with Shalamar.
But don't stop believing. Because while Journey tours with the Journey name and still garners good reviews, some Steve Perry fans will still hold out for the man himself, and not the Journey band without him:
Here's hoping "how we touched went our separate ways" will soon end with Steve Perry -- and that the original Journey man will resurface, and bring his beautiful, gorgeous, soaring voice with him again.

what about the man who replaced steve perry as the lead singer of journey? the asian guy who sounds EXACTLY like steve perry?
No way! if you want the Voice it has to has to be that of Steve "the voice" Perry. We have had the rest now we want THE BEST BACK!
The new Journey is like kissing a trannie....may look good but not the real thing.....
I beg to differ but Arnel Pineda does not sound exactly like Steve Perry. Deen Castronovo's voice is actually a closer match to the original Steve but Deen is a drummer and from I've heard him say in interviews, he's happy being a drummer and not a front man. I have had the privilege of seeing Journey both with and without Steve Perry. I have also seen Steve Perry solo and there is just no other voice out there that rivals his. Many have tried. Some have come close. Steve Perry will always be "The Voice". That being said, Journey is and was more than a mere back-up band for Steve. Journey started out with some extremely talented musician's and Neal Schon has been careful about who he chooses to be in his (yes HIS) band. I wish Mr. Pineda the best in his career with Journey but I do not see him being with the band for the long haul. Neal, if you're reading this, please just Call Steve Perry and do what you KNOW needs to be done to save your band.
Arnel Pineda IS Steve Perry's voice - back in 1980. I'd argue that Steve today probably sounds nothing like what he was 30 years ago and Arnel is closer. But, that being said, they should both appear on stage and do a duet. It would be great! So, I guess you could say, I love the music - then and now. I enjoy the shows now and then. Always been a fan - probably always will be.
No one can replace Steve Perry. We all know that. If Steve doesn't want to come back, then that's fine. Let the man be. Live your life. Enjoy! The Band "Journey" wants to continue on, and that is what they are doing. I think that is great! I do have to say the new guy does sound a little bit like Perry. That isn't the way to go. I remember Journy by their ballads. Would like to hear new ones. Good job.
Neal Schon is quite prudent, I fear,
Adding Arnel to the band tis' wise, twould appear,
Jonathan Cain once said,
Journey would be dead,
With 2 Steve Perrys to cheer.
Journey before Steve did NOTHING! Since Steve, they keep trying to re-invent a Steve look alike/sound alike. If Journey thinks they are a successful band without him, why? don't they go in their OWN direction, & stop trying to keep that Steve Perry sound. Face it, man--all incarnations of Journey since Steve constitute nothing more than a? "tribute" band. I wish Journey all the best, but Steve will always be "THE VOICE".
Anybody that watched The Early Show yesterday knows that the band itself is solid. I still refuse to agree that Arnel Pineda in a live performance sounds like Steve Perry. Other than the fact that they are both tenors. In his studio work, there is an uncanny similarity but one can do amazing things in the studio. The proof is on the stage. Jonathan Cain even said that when he first heard Perry's voice on an album that he doubted that Steve could pull it off live but Steve did. Steve Perry proved his abilities on stage. I have yet to see Arnel Pineda prove it on stage. I agree with Mary. They have become their own tribute band. That's fine. But...Neal, PLEASE stop saying that Arnel is the answer. There are better Journey tribute band singers out there. What is so wrong with changing directions? I have been a fan since the pre-Perry days and even though the music wasn't commercially sucessful, it is a solid body of work. Yes, Steve took them to fame and fortune. Arnel? hmmm
enough! enough already! cant you hear, put it on a higher decibels.
Neal get real. Journey is Steve Perry!
Without Steve, Journey's become a cheap imitation!
Hey nothing against Arnel, but he's NOT Steve Perry.
TO EVERYONE INVOLVED, PLEASE MEND THIS!! The FANS WANT JOURNEY BACK!!!
By the way Steve, I'm going to marry you!
LOL.....Big Fan in Cali
c'mon guys, this 2009 , do you really want to see Steve bouncing around and running aorund on stage, he cant' hardly walk with his hip replacement let alone sing high notes, face it guys , if he ever tries to sing , right now he would definitelt sound too geriatric, just like hearing your grandpa sing at church, go ahead we can still all listen to his music on tapes and cds but to hear him live, i can just imagine a 60 something y/o guy rockin into separate ways ....
Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Don Henley, Roger Daltrey, Sammy Hagar, John Fogerty all 60 plus and still ROCKIN!!!!!
On July 2,3,and 4, 2009 John Fogerty performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. The Bowl was completely sold out. NOW WHAT TITAN???
Come back Steve!!!
When he comes back with his new solo album hes working on right now, then all the non-believers will understand the passion and love we have for Mr Perry. To the person who said sp is 60 and to old to sing, you will be proven wrong. All I know is if Neal,Caine, and the rest can still sing and sound good then why the hell would you doubt perrys voice. Randy Jackson along with friends says he still has that golden voice and I believe it!!! The voice will return better then ever!!!
Since Steve Perry IS Journey, we (his fans) would love to see him reunite with the band members for old time's sake. I wonder if Steve knows how much he is and was a major part of rock music. If the Eagles can bury the hatchet and sing together, and Paul and Ringo now wish they had, how great it would be to hear Steve again. He says he never felt a part of Journey...how can that be? That's just wrong on every level.
,Its great to hear all the latest t.v shows and movies wanting the sound of journey with of course the master of voice Steve Perry..even after 30 something years journey with Perry is the most sought after becomming more popular even in this generation, what does that tell you,Steve will never ever fade away, seems he;s just getting more popular even in this generation,No ones knocking on the door of the new journey for to use their new music,hmmm...Well Steve may not be able to jump around like he use to, but id still give anything just to hear that voice again.."dont stop believing".
Jon Fogerty and Don Henley when they sing, their teeth really ROCKS !!!!!! (forgot to put fixodent),I am reallly excited to see Steve when he performs with his "new album" 2-3 hr concert ....hmmmmm Go Titans!!!!
It's time for hell to freeze over, and for the REAL Journey to reunite. No more cheap, substandard, imitations, there is only one VOICE of Journey and that is STEVE PERRY!
Don Henley and Glen Frey put aside their differences for the good of the band and the fans. Steve and Neal can do it too, before it's too late. Bring back Steve Smith also and get the Reunion Tour on the road! The fans are waiting with OPEN ARMS...
Steve will always be "THE ONE AND ONLY."
Thinking of you, your in my thoughts and prayers. There's so much more to life...
I was in Vegas this labor day holiday and Original Air Supply is performing @ The Orleans. They are my one of my fave bands during 80's along with Journey. I have all the chance to watch them but tough to imagine 60 yrs olds performing in front of me. I can't deny, I am 55, the hype was there, but I don't want to watch them how they are right now. That falls similar to Steve Perry, he is always remembered as the Legend. The hype is there, but I dont want to watch him anymore... no matter how I miss him.
We love Steve Perry and can't wait if he comes out with new material but we will be satisfied with his legacy of children! (His songs) Just so you can see how much we love this man, please check out our website: TheOtherMrsPerry.com
To TITANIUM
HOT, SEXY, passionate, and soulful..the best singer of this millenium- STEVE PERRY!!!
Steve Perry had a larger vocal and educated VOICE range and could? actually hit the higher notes without going flat in a prolonged one.
not only does Steve have a great tone and ability to control it. he has a creative genius for melody. that just cant be replaced.
OK..Thank you
PERRY ON!!!
Steve Perry is loved by millions and I'm pretty damn sure he wouldn't be making a comeback album if he didn't sound great! There have been quotes that he still sounds fantastic. There will ever only be 1 voice of Journey that stands the passing of time (The Voice is Steve Perry)
hey you guys who worship and adore mr.steve perry, why dont you yourselves contact him and tell him to come back to the band. and regarding arnel pineda, he was chosen by neal. he did not insist himself to be with journey. he is not copying nor imitating steve perry.and why always comparison between him and steve perry. he has his own voice and in fairness he has God given talent. why can't you guys accept arnel?is it because he is an ASIAN as many are saying. he is a FILIPINO! and again he has a talent.you whites that easily get sunburn!!!racist!! racism is from the devil. go to hell!
Hello Maris, I'm part Filipino and at no time in these posts have I seen anyone make this into a racist issue. To clarify, this is about preference: some prefer Steve's voice, some prefer Arnel's voice. Relax and enjoy the music. God bless you.
Mr. Perry is magic and one in a million. I wish him all the best with his retirement (even though I'd love a comeback as much as any loyal Steve Perry fan!) Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll decide to stretch his already impressive talents towards acting (Glee cameo anyone?) I saw a recent photo on the internet and he's still hot (hey, I'm only 31 but I can still dream!) Either way, I'm just glad yet another generation gets to discover Steve Perry and classic Journey, just like I did-Have fun!
well, well again.i know you guys adore steve perry. but what can you do now. neal schon had already CHOSEN arnel to be the frontman since 2007. but why complain only now?!!!why not before?!! you should rally before in journey,s studio in san francisco when arnel was doing audition and insist steve perry to come back to the band in front of neal's face. and again it is not arnel's fault he was CHOSEN. and who is he to turn down an offer from a great band. if you were to be offerred an opportunity like this and you know you have a God given talent will you turn this offer down?1!!!think about it!! i know guys you prefer steve perry but what can you do now?!! if i were you guys boycott the journey concert, don't buy tickets don't buy their cd's and stop complaining.maybe neal schon will decide back and BEG for steve perry to come back.but as long your buying concert ticket it means you still like the band without steve perry. but in fairness to arnel pineda he has a good voice of of his own
i am not a journey fan but i heard their songs way back before when i was young.open arms and faithfully are the most i like.i like chicago and airsupply among the bands. it is now that i am following journey beacause of arnel. no more arnel in journey no more following of journey. mary is right on her comment. all the succeeding singers are all doing a "tribute"only to the band.to me all singers of this band has his own thing all have different talents of their own.
arnel pineda said the following:
1. he is not replacing steve perry but he is just continuing his legacy 2. steve perry is his biggest influence.3. he is just a overseas worker here in america working for journey.would these things be enough to stop the controversy between him and steve perry.!!!
The point is, Journey would not be Journey without Steve Perry who made them famous. My beef with Journey now is that they are now on their 2nd "Steve Perry" replacement with each trying to sound like the ORIGINAL. WHY??? Lots of bands have gone on after their singers left or died, but did they all try to "reproduce" their glory with a sound alike??? Get a singer for Journey and not a replacement of the Original Steve Perry. As for wanting a Journey tour with Steve Perry fronting, I COULD CARE LESS. I being a TRUE Steve Perry fan would be MORE THAN ECSTATIC to just see Steve in concert on his own - ALL STEVE!!!!! PLEASE STEVE WE JUST WANT YOU IN CONCERT. COME TO KANSAS CITY. I tried to see Journey in Dallas, TX in the early 80's, but my ticket got stolen and this has been one of my biggest disappointments in life. I still await the man... Steve Perry!!!!!

People, I think the reason Perry isn't performing is because he can't sing anymore. He hasn't done anything musically since 1998 when he did a song for the Quest for Camelot movie. Didn't he have throat problems? A singer of his talents doesn't just "retire".
read again my 4 comments. thank you.
Bobman and Maris, you're definitely on the ball, thanks for keeping it real . Go Titans , beat the Teaxans next Sunday.....
Journey is the most loved band in america with steve of course. I think ths new guy is caught in the cross fire. He ilolizes steve perry. He even leaves the roon whrn the other guys start bashing steve. That takes class in my eyes. No i will not buy their new records because i cannot listen to any one other than steve. He has got me through so many different dituations in my life and i truly love him. My husband of 29 years has had to listen to steve for all these years. Good thing he likes him too. My children and now grandchildren will grow up to know steve and what he means to me. His vocals just run through me. I love Journey as well after all it tool all five to make the magic and without them all the magic is gone. Steve solo was good as well.
Perry on forever.

YOU PEOPLE ARE OXY MORONS. YOU ARE DUMB**(*&*. PERRY IS RETIRED DIP*&(*&(*&. MOVE ON. ENJOY JOURNEY WITH THEIR NEW LEAD SINGER. DUMB*((*&(&
so if you find the new frontman arnel pineda not suitable to your taste, so do not go to any of the journey concert nor buy their album. who cares. and again read my four comments.t.y.
I saw journey several times from Steve Perry to Arnel Pineda. I must say that I am totally impressed with their new lead singer who sounds like Steve Perry. He also impressed me that he can imitate Led Zepellin singer and even Sting. California, New York,Honolulu likes the new singer. I am wondering why such a stinking state like Ohio or Indiana are making negative headwaves with this new Journey lineup. Is it because they are prejudiced since this is an Asian singer ? IT makes me wonder. We are all immigrants from Europe and so on. Still journey packs up the house...and many sold out concerts to date. Go journey. Don't give a hoot about these ignorant people here.
it is good that arnel pineda the new frontman of journey idolizes steve perry . there is nothing wrong with that. if only i can see steve perry and talk to him in person i don't think he will not act the same way his fans is doing with arnel.
I am from Chile not Chili.
We saw Arnel Pineda back in 2008 and were totally in awe.
Latin America and even Europe love this guy. Anyway, Arnel
doesn't need your approval. He is doing fine making millions
on sold out concerts. You are just the minority who don't like him. To each his own. As for me.....I agree with the Latin American countries who thinks Arnel Pineda is journey ....He is one awesome dude.
Debbie Rose is a freak !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who is confused about life................
I just said that because I am jealous of Arnel. I want an operation to be a man and become Steve Perry and to sing like Steve Perry. I want to be a man......
you know why journey is still soaring high even though the frontman is not white? the answer is this-------i read in a book that if somebody adopt or embrace a foreigner GOD will bless this person.neal embraces a foreigner like arnel so god blesses his band.that is why GOD blesses america because SHE adopts, welcome, embraces people from all countries that come to this country.
Uh-oh. Classic fan(atic) comments I found on here.hahaaha It's sooo un-freakin-believable when fans fight, talk nasty, blubber and argue (to no end results) about their idols when the subject of their arguments dont even know, or dont even care, what people are saying. I am a die-hard Steve Perry fan (and a Filipino at that) and I REALLY think these Steve-Arnel comparisons, arguments, debates or whatever you call it, is sooo uncalled for. Steve has left a wonderful legacy with his music, let's just leave it at that and let's leave him alone! As for Arnel, God-speed and congratulations on his success. Why the rivalry??
you're right.!!!!
Interesting article...Not only well written but about my favorite subject, Steve Perry! I am still believing he will be back in the mix this year. Ha, A man leaving his wife for a Blonde at the pick and save as while hearing the chorus to Lovin',Touchin',Squeezin' LOL, now that is too funny. Anyway, If these networks aren't begging Steve Perry to come out for a TV interview the must be insane. Think of the viewers that would attract! To have him on "American Idol" would absolutely crush the record books in viewing...Oh well, maybe someone will get the big picture. Anyway, and I am with you on this one, and I too am awaiting with hopes that Steve Perry will soon return!
Steve Perry.....Steve Perry....the original....the one that kept me together....in my dysfunctional family. I yearn one day to see Mr. Perry in concert. The man with the golden voice....the gift....I was to young to see the Beatles....to poor to attend a Steve Perry concert.....I await now.....to owner the person who brought joy to my soul and made me forget the violence in my household.
