Steve Jobs died today at the age of 56, Apple posted on its website. Jobs was co-founder of Apple, maker of the Macintosh, iPod and iPhone.

Jobs recently stepped down as CEO of Apple due to health problems and appointed Tim Cook his successor. Less than a month later he lost his battle to pancreatic cancer.

Apple posted the following on its website:

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amaing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve lost a dear friend and inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behing a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Jobs will long be remembered as the man who started and saved Apple. The man who turned Apple into the powerhouse it is today, and the trendsetter that turned the company into a worldwide brand of excellence. He is also responsible for making Pixar an industry giant in the animation industry.

With Jobs’ passing, the company is now Tim Cook’s going forward. While many are saddened by the loss of Jobs, that grief will no doubt turn to anxiousness as to what the direction of the company will be without Jobs’ influence in the longterm.

Apple also set up an email address for people to send their thoughts to. The address is rememberingsteve@apple.com
