Steve Carell as a magician and Halle Berry as a 911 operator this weekend

The biggest weekend of the still relatively young 2013 movie season happened last weekend. The new Oz movie seems very likely (if it hasn’t already) to break the precious 100 million dollar mark. Now, this weekend, a couple of smaller movies open, but these are no less ambitious for the studios that funded them. Will Steve Carell or Halle Berry be able to take the top spot away from a magical journey to the land of Oz? We shall see.

Here are the movies opening March 15, 2013:

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone - Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde. Two magicians have been superstars on the Las Vegas strip for years. They are Burt Wonderstone and his assistant Anton Marvelton, played by Carell and Steve Buscemi. They are a breed of older magicians with elaborate costumes and stage production. Now, however, a newcomer has come to town. That newcomer is Steve Gray, played by Jim Carrey, who does outrageous stunts that appear to push the limits of what humans can do. He is also known for doing up close magic. Can Burt, who has become complacent and forgotten what made him love magic in the first place, find his mojo and save the show? Rated PG-13.

The Call - Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Morris Chestnut. Berry plays a veteran 911 operator who, one night, gets a frantic call from a teenage girl. The girl has been kidnapped and is in the trunk of a car. Before Berry’s character can do anything, however, the call is cut off. Can she set out to find the girl and rescue her and bring down a terrifying serial killer? Rated R.
