Steve Burton explains his jump to ‘Young and the Restless’

Steve Burton took a lot of heat when he made the decision to take on the role of Dylan McAvoy on the CBS soap, “The Young and the Restless.” This comes just three months after he left the daytime drama he had been on for over 20 years, “General Hospital.” Many fans were confused and angry over the whole ordeal. TV Guide Magazine posted an interview with Burton on Jan. 15 to get his side of the story.

First off, the 42-year-old soap star said that he is a worker and that he never intended to retire. He wanted some alone time with his family and enjoyed the three months he had off. Burton said, “The truth is, if I'd gotten an offer for a primetime show or a movie, I probably wouldn't be on ‘Y&R’ right now. I just want to work.”

He added, “People see me as Jason so much they forget I'm an actor. And an actor wants to explore! We're so blessed in daytime to have jobs that go on forever, but it does keep you from trying other things. Actors are gypsies. They're not supposed to have the same job for 20 or 25 years!”

The blue-eyed hunk will be getting more time off with his new gig, including long weekends so he can be with his family in Nashville more often. It sounds like CBS gave him a deal that he couldn’t pass up to be able to have the best of both worlds as a daytime star. His decision was based on what works for him and his family, which is understandable. He said he might still be at “GH” if accommodations were made. Basically, if he hadn’t moved to Nashville and was still in California, he would still have his role as Jason Morgan.

Steve Burton explained, “It was too difficult production-wise to work things out and I understand that. I know how the business works and I'm not going to get mad over it. I don't want a show to break its back for one actor. It's not right. Besides, it really felt like it was time for me to go. I was gracious. They were gracious. There are no hard feelings with me and [exec producer] Frank Valentini.”

As fans try to grasp why the actor would jump ship and move to a completely different show and character, it sounds like he was ready for a change and even a little excited about his new job. He is a man that needs to provide for his family and an opportunity presented itself at just the right time. Who can blame him for that?

He will be making his debut on the CBS soap on Jan. 29. Look for a new haircut and a whole different wardrobe for the actor on his new soap.
