Mystery series authors Steve Berry, Laura Lippman and Sara Paretsky joined with their writing colleagues in Washington D.C. today for Day One of the National Book Festival. The Sept. 24-25, 2011 event has extended its duration to two days for the first time in its eleven-year history.
Steve Berry, former co-president of International Thriller Writers and a participant in Operation Thriller 2010, writes the Cotton Malone series, which feature a former U.S. Justice Department operative who has retired to become an antiquarian book dealer. Berry chronicles Cotton Malone’s most recent adventure in The Jefferson Key (2011).
Laura Lippman, the 2010 president of Mystery Writers of America, writes the Tess Monaghan mystery series, to which Ostar Enterprises recently acquired the television rights. The Girl in the Green Raincoat, the latest Tess Monaghan title, was released in book form in 2011 after being serialized in The New Yorker.
Sara Paretsky, known for her Chicago-based V.I. Warshawski series, was named Mystery Writers of America’s 2011 Grand Master. Breakdown, the newest title to feature Paretsky’s private investigator, will be released in January 2012.
Held on Washington D.C.’s National Mall and sponsored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Festival celebrates the joys of reading and of lifelong learning. More than 100 authors, illustrators and poets contribute to this annual event, which Laura Bush originated in 2001. President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama serve as honorary chairs for the 2011 festival, which is, as always, free and open to the public.
