NEW YORK, NEW YORK—Halloween may have been “officially over,” but this did not stop the influx of partygoers from brandishing costumes and face paint Saturday, November 2 to celebrate the final night of RPM’s five-night, “Pier of Fear” Halloween festival that invaded Manhattan’s Pier 94 over the course of the past week. Unicorns, dinosaurs, monkeys, even shirtless guidos were lured from the wood-work depths on Saturday in an effort to become “Aokified,” as the crowd-rafting, sheet-cake-tossing performer, Steve Aoki infiltrated the Hudson River venue with boundless energy and music for one final night in New York City.
Since the news of Steve Aoki’s Friday venue change from Pier 94 to Hammerstein Ballroom due to permitting issues, Aoki’s Saturday performance had become that much more desirable and anticipated for fans to attend. The large venue space provided an optimized concert experience outside the customary network of clubs and concert halls that are the standard amongst most artists in the tri-state area, setting Saturday’s Aoki performance apart from the rest.
Emulating a grandiose “Governor’s Beach Club” aura, the massive tented area set the stage for openers: Pharell, Borgore, and Waka Flaka Flame to heighten the energy in their own unique way, while dancers pranced along elevated catwalks in unison veering silver cloaks to and fro toward the concert lookers below.
Seething with eagerness for Steve Aoki to begin, the crowd began singing the top-40 hits that were emitting from a DJ on stage, ultimately creating an individualized feeling to the night as strangers were singing, dancing, even hugging in the dark before the main performer even appeared.
With an opening that glared the letters A-O-K-I from the stage, along panels of large screens on opposite ends of the venue walls, Aoki emerged wearing a t-shirt radiating electrifying blue lights sending attendees into an uproar. The vigor that compelled the crowd this night, and really any night of an Aoki performance, is indescribable. Aoki delivers more than just a music performance; he delivers a show of magnanimous proportion. Never once letting a split-second to elapse for revelers to grow weary, massive sheet cakes hurled toward audience members from stage, rafts surfaced before fans’ eyes to “crowd raft,” and sky-high, glowing, green “transformers” danced on stage, making you feel as if you were living one big Aoki acid-trip.
The music Aoki delivered synthesized an assortment of classic favorites that included, “No Beef,” “Phat Brahms,” and “Turbulence,” with newer hits such as: “Boneless” featuring Chris Lake, “Get Ready,” and “Bring You to Life.” Fans expressed their admiration by vocalizing the lyrics, sending a unified sensation amidst the crowd as the thousands embraced a common love for music above all else. In addition, Aoki announced a new track that will be released with world-renowned Afrojack that sent fans into a dancing frenzy, so be on the lookout for that announcement in the near future.
Overall, Steve Aoki’s performances are original and nothing like any other DJ in the EDM industry. Never disappointing his fans, he always exudes an energy on stage that is nothing short of infectious. His Aokify America tour will be continuing through November, so don’t miss out on these legendary performances.
