Steps to soothe an itchy sunburn

See also

The last few weeks of summer bring those final days of going to the pool, lying on the beach, and busying ourselves with outdoor activities. Unfortunately, with these activities comes exposure to sun and burns.

We’ve all suffered from a sunburn at least once in our life no matter how much sunscreen we slather on. They can be painful, unattractive, and not to mention irritatingly itchy! If you find yourself in a bind with an itchy, drive-you-crazy sunburn, follow this quick guide to soothe your skin back to health.

  1. Shower: Take a warm shower that will thoroughly rinse your skin. Do not use soap or a cloth; it is too abrasive and will only aggravate your sunburn. Do not stay in the water for longer than ten minutes. Extended exposure to water after a sunburn will only dry skin further, causing a bigger itch.
  2. Pat dry: Once you are out of the shower, pat yourself dry with a towel. Do not rub! Rubbing will only cause further irritation.
  3. Water and vinegar: It may seem like a stinky solution, but give it a chance! Fill a spray bottle with a mixture of water and vinegar and spray sunburned areas. Let your skin drip and dry; do not rub! After five minutes the smell of vinegar will vanish from your skin.
  4. Reapply: Spray yourself every four hours as needed. If done faithfully, your sunburn will be less likely to dry and peel, leaving behind glowing tan skin.

*Note. Be sure to drink plenty of water while nursing a sunburn. Doing so will keep you hydrated and help your skin heal faster.
