A healthy dog is one that is glowing with a shiny, lustrous coat. When your dog looks good, it is a sign that it feels good. Of course, it takes a little work and regular grooming to provide a healthy shiny coat. Contact your local Rockford-area Petsmart or Petco as listed below or one closest to your home for tips on keeping the pet’s coat healthy and shiny along with providing you the tools to do so.
Proper nutrition is the first step for a healthy shiny coat of fur. A balanced diet will include protein as a first ingredient on the label along with carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and whole grains. Avoid generic foods that are full of chemicals, fillers and by-products. Your veterinarian can suggest a quality dog food that would benefit skin and coat. A homemade diet is sometimes a great option but you don’t want to overload it with vitamins and minerals that could cause more harm than good.
Keep up with regular brushing and combing of the coat. This is not only for the beauty and shine but also to monitor for parasites, rashes, infections, lumps, bumps and more that you may not notice without handling your pet often. Parasites can take a lot out of your pet, robbing it of essential nutrients that leads to loss of luster and shine, not to mention other medical issues. If you suspect parasites that are not visible, your vet can do a fecal exam to determine if there is a problem that needs to be treated internally. Results will be evident on the outside as well.
As discussed in a previous article, the right tools are essential in grooming your dog. There are appropriate brushes and combs designed to get through any type of dog coat from short to long. Rakes and combs are designed to remove mats and detangle the fur. The brush removes dead skin cells, fur and dander while also distributing natural skin oils. Be sure to always brush your pet prior to bath time because once a mat gets wet, it shrinks during the drying process, making it nearly impossible to remove without shaving it out. If your dog is matted to the skin, you may need to see your vet or a groomer to have the coat shaved.
Some pets need frequent baths while others do not. If your pet starts getting that doggy smell, it is time to head for the tub. If there is a skin or medical concern, discuss this with your vet. There are special shampoos and conditioners for all dog’s skin types and concerns. Never use human products that differ in pH levels than the pet. If you are unsure what dog shampoo to use for healthy skin and coat, contact your vet for advice. However, most often, a protein-enriched conditioning shampoo should provide your dog with a healthy shiny coat. Just be sure to rinse well or any soap residue will dull the coat and cause irritation to the skin.
There are special finishing sprays designed to bring out the luster and shine in your dog’s coat. Most are applied to a wet coat and contains silicone to seal the hair shaft, help it to lay flat and ease the combing and brushing process. Just use sparingly.
A little grooming goes a long way in providing your dog a lustrous, healthy, shiny coat. Work from the inside out with nutrition and continue with a daily to weekly brushing regimen so your dog with look and feel healthy and as happy as it looks.
