Stephen Sondheim’s Company, won six of the 14 categories in the Tony Awards, establishing it as a hugely successful Broadway production that now comes to the White Theatre at the Jewish Community Center on Feb. 8.
On his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor, Bobby (Joel Morrison)rethinks his status and looks carefully at his complicated relationship with his circle of married friends. Should he finally settle down or is he better off as is? It’s a question he must ponder as he drops into various vignettes with five unpredictable couples and three girlfriends. Bobby looks for the good and bad of relationships. He explores the risk and bonuses of each couple. Company, a typical New York story, magnifies the NYC lifestyles and the city rhythms with the assistance of Sondheim’s music.
“Sondheim and playwright George Furth weave a series of sketches of married life together into a cohesive whole that, with wit and wisdom, explores the eternal human conflict between the fear of intimacy and the fear of being alone,” Krista Blackwood, director of cultural arts, said. “Whether you are single or married, Company will strike a chord and ultimately have you leaving the theater thrilled with the experience of being alive.”
Cast member Samantha Agron describes the show as “very unique, because Company differs from a typical song and dance musical. Instead, the show focuses on the characters, on the relationships, and on telling life stories that are so true and so relatable.”
Company is directed by Barb Nichols with musical direction by Martha Risser, who both made their White Theatre directing debut earlier with the smash hit Les Misérables.
A cast of 14 talented local actors makes up the cast of Company. According to a spokesman, many auditioned for the opportunity to work with Nichols and Risser.
“Barb and Martha are one of the best directing teams in Kansas City.” Agron said. “ They know how to challenge you to think bigger and dig deeper while supporting you for the choices you make. It’s a wonderful atmosphere to work.”
