Stephen King TV series ‘Grand Central’ coming to ABC

Stephen King is experiencing a resurgence in popularity thanks to adaptations. With the Stephen King TV show “Under the Dome” proving a success, The Hollywood Reporter reported on Dec. 11 that his short story “Grand Central” might be coming to ABC.

With both “Under the Dome” and the SyFy Network’s “Haven” both proving popular, ABC wants to bet on more success with “Grand Central,” a possible straight-to-series order for Summer 2014 from the same writers who worked on “Haven.” That SyFy show was also based on a shorter Stephen King story, “The Colorado Kid.”

“Grand Central” is based on King’s short story “The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates” from his short story collection “Just After Sunset.” The story centers on a woman who gets a phone call from her husband two days after he died in a plane crash. He warns her of two other tragedies coming her way that also come true and helps save her life.

The story is short and most of it involves her getting the phone call, while the tragedies happen in short snippets of the woman’s recollection as she moves on with her life. “Grand Central” will have to do a lot to flesh this out into a TV series, but “Haven” did a lot with the setup from “Colorado Kid,” so there is a chance this could work out well for ABC television.
