In anticipation of the premiere of American Vampire later this week, Stephen King has premiered a short teaser trailer for the comic book, in which he partners with writer Scott Snyder and artist Rafael Albuquerque.

King has had a long association with comic books, dating back to Creepshow where he referenced the EC horror comics of the fifties. In more recent years he has licensed out The Dark Tower and The Stand to Marvel Comics and The Talisman to Del Rey for adaptation and expansion of those literary universes, but American Vampire is the first comic book he has actually scripted.

The Daily Beast interviews King about the project and the challenges of writing a comic book script versus other kinds of writing:

“You have to be very humble, and you have to take advice because it’s a new way of seeing, to actually write it is a new way of writing,” King says. “I found out that Scott and Mark Doyle, who is the editor of the book, were kind of shuffling around some of my layouts because they were seeing it more clearly than I was, and I was just trying to be a good student and learn how to do it.”

The Daily Beast also has a three-page preview of American Vampire #1.

The teaser trailer for American Vampire is available at StephenKing.com. American Vampire #1, written by Scott Snyder and Stephen King, with art by Rafael Albuquerque, will be released on Wednesday, March 17 by Vertigo. It will be a $3.99 comic, and will be available at Comic Town in Westerville as well as many other comic book retailers around Columbus.
