Stephen Hawking says 'No God; heaven is a fairy tale' - Twitter lights up

Stephen Hawking, noted theoretical physicist, cosmologist and one of the world's most respected scientists, set the Twitterverse on fire Monday after controversial claims he made in an exclusive interview with the British paper the Guardian went viral. Hawking's claims: There is no God, and heaven is a fairy tale for those afraid of death.

Hawking is no stranger to controversy. Previously Hawking has been attacked by the religious faithful for his clear commitment to rational thought, and his courage to share the fruit of his intellectual labors.

In his most recent book, The Grand Design, Hawking argues that god did not create the universe and that the Big Bang was a natural event that could've created everything from nothing.

As one might expect, those holding on to what freethinkers consider religious dogma and superstition, reject Hawking's claims. However, just as many of the faithful reject Hawking's claims, many freethinkers applaud Hawking's candor.

The following is a sample of tweets from the relevant Twitter stream:

Well said sir, I agree completely. Stephen Hawking: Heaven is "a fairy story" for people who fear death

That Stephen Hawking is going to hell in a handcart.......Sorry, just been told it's actually a wheelchair with a built-in voice synthesiser

Stephen Hawking says there's no heaven...maybe he only said that because it isnt wheelchair accessible

Stephen Hawking just declared there is no "heaven". Well then....explain bacon...."Mr Big Brain"!!!

So people who believe in a religion can talk about it all the time but Stephen Hawking can't give his opinion? Big hypocrisy.

Stephen Hawking says that Heaven is nothing more than a 'fairy story', he is so going to Hell!

Stephen Hawking: Heaven is "a fairy story". Well duh Heaven and Hell is just a concept to make people follow a moral code. They don't exist!

What do you think when Hawking says: “There is no heaven or afterlife; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”
