In this time of government shutdown, Stephen Colbert has promised us, his Colbert Nation, that he will provide all cancelled government services. Also, as he confirmed on "The Colbert Report" on Thursday, October 3rd, Stephen is an ordained minister due to obtaining the certification on the American Marriage Ministries website. This is very lucky for newlyweds, Mike Cassesso and MaiLien Le. They appeared on "The Today Show" and CNN this week because their wedding was planned to be held at the Jefferson Memorial, which happens to be the location of their first date, and it is currently closed to the public. Colbert felt bad for the couple and offered to marry them on the Thursday's episode.
The set was transformed into a chapel, and Colbert adorned a robe. Cassesso and his groomsmen took the stage in front of a few rows of friends and family. His best man couldn't make it, so due to the parks being on shutdown, Smokey the Bear was available and stood in. Stephen did shots with the guys to represent the bachelor party, then brought out the bridemaids and did shots with them to represent the bachelorette party. He adorned a policeman's hat and got his groove on for a few seconds like a stripper. The ring bearer went to the stage and did a shot with Stephen, as well. Don't freak out because that appeared to be water. When MaiLien finally came out, after a suspense-filled commercial break, she was carrying to represent a bouquet one of Colbert's two Emmys that he won a few weeks back.
Before the vows, Mandy Patinkin came out and sang a Hebrew prayer and to promote the new season of "Homeland". Stephen pronounced them man and wife after the I do's. Tony winner, Audra McDonald, provided the vocals for the couple's first newlywed dance, Billy Idol's "White Wedding". Colbert closed the segment by waving, "Happy shutdown everybody!" He is not currently available for bar mitzvahs.
