Last night Stephen Colbert focused all of his time on the gun control controversy in an episode entitled “Stephen Colbert’s Double Barrel Blam-O-Rama.” Colbert began the episode by making fun of Vice President Joe Biden for saying there is no “silver bullet” to the gun violence problem. However, Colbert saved his best mockery for gun advocates who have likened the struggle against gun control to the struggle against civil rights.
Last Friday Larry Ward, chairman of national Gun Appreciation Day, defended his decision to schedule Gun Appreciation Day on the same weekend as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Ward claimed that MLK would have supported Gun Appreciation Day, a claim that Colbert draws into serious question with the following remark,
“Yes, Dr. Martin Luther King would be pro-gun just as surely as Jesus would be pro-nail.”
Colbert went on to question Ward’s argument that slavery might have been prevented if African Americans were just given the right to own firearms,
“I guess all Larry Ward is saying is that America would have been a better place if George Washington and Thomas Jefferson had been shot by their slaves.”
