Stephen Colbert makes plans to enter South Carolina presidential primary

Comedian Stephen Colbert announced on "The Colbert Report" that he is exploring a presidential run in South Carolina.

During the opening segment of Thursday's show, he formally handed control of his super PAC to Jon Stewart.

"I am proud to announce that I am forming an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for president of the United States of America of South Carolina," Colbert said during the Thursday evening, several hours before airtime on Comedy Central.

Colbert had previously offered to pay the Republican Party $40,000 if they would allow him to sponsor the state's Presidential Primary. As part of the deal, Republicans would have also added a referendum question to the ballot asking if corporations should be treated as people.

In a recent Public Policy Poll, Colbert was the choice of 5 percent of South Carolina's registered Republicans, placing him just ahead on John Huntsman in the poll.
