Is Stephen Colbert CBS' top choice to replace the retiring David Letterman? Sources indicate that New Jersey's Colbert (Montclair) discussed the Letterman job when David first mentioned the timing of his retirement. As Late Show fans know David Letterman is planning to depart late in 2015.

Colbert's Comedy Central contract is up at the end of this year. CBS has, of course, been talking to lots of people about the spot (including Jon Stewart), but sources say Colbert is "the front-and-center candidate."

Colbert has hosted The Colbert Report since 2005 after getting his start on Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.
