The woman apparently caught in the center of a high profile media storm is Stephanie Birkitt, David Letterman's former assistant.
According to a search warrant Birkitt was more recently the accused extortionist Robert Joe Halderman's girlfriend. Sources indicate that Halderman was living with Birkitt in the recent past.
The warrant refers to a package Halderman sent Letterman. According to the document, the package contained correspondence belonging to Birkitt. TMZ reports that Letterman was having a relationship with Birkitt but ended it before his son was born in 2003.
Sources have told RadarOnline that she is "mortified” that Halderman would use her fling with Letterman to “blackmail her boss."
Birkitt is a 1997 graduate of Wake Forest University. She worked as an intern in the writers' department at the "Late Show" in 1996 while still in school.
But she was also employed at "48 Hours," the show where Halderman was a producer. Birkitt later became Letterman's assistant.
On his show Thursday night, Letterman admitted to having "had sex with women who work with me on this show" and further explained that he had given testimony before a grand jury against the alleged blackmailer.
