If 2014 is to be a New Year and a fresh start, merely stating some of the nation's problems is not enough. What can one do in the face of this decline? Pray. Fervently. Frequently. Specifically. "The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man (and woman) avails much" (James 5:16). Christians need to constantly keep our nation in prayer. Read the newspaper, articles on-line, watch news reports etc. and pray over what is happening. Look for Bible verses and promises that apply and stand on them. Pray about people in the news, such as Miley Cyrus. Ask God what to pray for her and the nation. God wants the unrighteous to repent. He does not delight in them perishing, but wishes that all come to know Him. Also remember that "We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places"( Ephesians 6:12. Don't come against groups of people (unless God directs you that way ) but remember who is prince of the air and fight your battle in prayer against him and his demons.
Step out in faith and get involved in your community to help those who are hurting or in need: pregnancy support centers, meals on wheels, soup kitchens, senior citizen and nursing homes. Volunteer and be a mentor to a young person through local programs, after school programs, Big Brothers and Sisters or similar organizations. Check what your local church has to offer for volunteer opportunities: evangelism, youth outreach programs, prayer groups, drug addiction centers, etc.
Be part of a body of believers. Be an example to others and mentor a young Christian or lead a youth program. Most importantly, pray about where God wants you to serve. Your job might be your mission field, reach out to others, get to know them, their needs and their hurts. Volunteer to pray for them, to help them. The opportunities are endless. Just look around and wake up to what God is doing in the midst of this land. Enter into His plans.
