October 3rd marked the twentieth anniversary of the tragic death of Stefano Casiraghi. He was killed when his catamaran flipped off the shore of Atlantic City, where he was defending his World title. The beloved husband of the then HSH Princess Caroline of Monaco, she is now HRH Princess of Hanover, Hereditary Princess of Monaco. Besides leaving a 33 year old widow, he left behind three young children – Andrea, Charlotte and Pierre who have now grown into confidant young adults. Today finds the "first lady" of Monaco on the verge of the end of her third marriage to Ernst August of Hanover having returned to living full time in her native country.
To mark the anniversary, the Como village Fino Mornasco commemorated the day that took one of its most famous sons. Beyond being famous for his family, he founded and ran a number of successful companies and was a world champion offshore racer. To mark the occasion his mother Fernanda laid flowers at the memorial for her youngest son. She was surrounded by friends and family, including two of her three surviving children. Marco the eldest child and patriarch since their father’s 1998 death, was absent. Also missing from the service were Princess Caroline and the couple’s three children, although there were reports that Andrea attended a more private family dinner later. In comments to reporters Fernanda said that Princess Caroline still calls her “Mama”.
