After being one of the final cuts on the U.S. National Junior Team that won gold last winter at the World Junior Championship, Devils prospect Stefan Matteau is being given another chance to represent his country.
USA Hockey released their preliminary roster for this years U.S. National Junior Team which was made up of 26 players, including Matteau and New Jersey Devils prospect Steven Santini.
Matteau has spent the season with the Albany Devils (AHL) and has five goals and six assists in 20 games. The Devils' 2012 first-round pick will be loaned to the U.S Team for training camp and the tournament if he makes the final roster on Dec. 23. .
Santini was drafted by the Devils in the second round of the 2013 draft last June and currently plays for the Boston College Eagles. In 11 games as a freshman, the defenseman from New York has four points.
The U.S. earned their third title at the International tournament last January in Russia, defeating Sweden in the gold medal game by the score of 3-1. Johnny Gaudreau lead the American team with seven goals, two assists and nine points. Goaltender John Gibson of the U.S. team was named the tournament's MVP.
Tryouts are set to begin Dec. 15 at the University of Minnesota with the tournament starting on Dec. 26 in Malmo, Sweden.
