Steely Dan extended their current tour in June and it graciously included four dates in the sunshine state, with the close of the Florida trek coming to the Ruth Eckerd Hall. The dynamic duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen will bring their eccentricity, humor and lyric genius to Clearwater this weekend when they play at the Ruth Eckerd Hall, Saturday, September 14th at 8:00 PM. This show is sold out to the fullest seating capacity, as many other dates on this tour are.
The Pretzel Logic twins are joined on stage by The Bipolar Allstars and the Borderline Brats. Together, they will treat audiences to selections from The Dan's extraordinary four-decade catalog, rich with infectious tunes, bodacious harmonies, irresistible grooves, and sleek, subversive lyrics — punctuated by blazing solo work and rich ensembles. As always with the adventurous Fagen and Becker, a few surprises may be in store as well. This tour is as unique as Steely Dan in that each stop will feature a selected album or a few and some audience requests as well. With a library that spans forty-one years this is a great way to enjoy some fabulous classics.
This sarcastic and 'follow along if you can' interview duo has sold more than forty million albums since the release of Can't Buy a Thrill, in 1972 -- seven platinum albums just between 1972-80 alone. They have won multiple Grammy's and were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2001. This tour is a true treat for fans that have come to love the jazz infused, grooving and lyrical satire of this amazing musical force created by two of the brilliant minds in the music industry.
The Chicago Sun-Times raved of this tour: "This was different. This was live. This was vibrant. This was a cascade of color carried along by Fagen, Becker, eight brilliant supporting musicians and three superb backing vocalists."
Seven dates were added to this tour at the Beacon Theatre, in New York City, in the beginning of October and they have already sold out as well. There is one thing for certain, Steely Dan has successfully remained relevant to music and their fans lives and memories for over forty years and how intelligent they are with their interviewing 'skills' to always leave that interviewer wanting more -- as their fans do also -- may be an important part of this continued fascination into Steely Dan.
This fan is positive that we fans would all like to know what secret to their mastered success is...we may never know and there are things in life we are meant not to understand or comprehend. Sometimes in life we are fortunate enough to meet another being where it just clicks and works and for this fan, that is plenty to satisfy, because it is all about the music and what it means to us and the memories it strikes within us. Steely Dan has been a part of my universe as long as I can recall, it was not breakfast in my house unless Steely Dan, or Pink Floyd were flooding the air waves. It's a window back to great days and grand music and it shall always be. Maybe it simply all comes down to two creative beings sharing the same love and passion for the same things in life and writing music about it...and they are just witty enough to keep everyone guessing, it worked didn't it? When you find it, you find it and you keep it going.
Whatever the case may be, if there are tickets available for any remaining shows on this tour it is highly recommended that you do so immediately, as they are selling better than the hot cakes in this tours name. Grab your opportunity to see this grand show, as you never know when their last anything could arrive. We are fortunate enough to be invited to photograph this show and it is an honor to even be approved. Special thanks out to the Steely Dan camp and the staff at Ruth Eckerd Hall for a great opportunity and a real treat.
"No. It's just a smell now. Next thing is then you taste it, then you start to feel it. You know how this goes." - Walter Becker.
It has been stated that these this pair may smell some new music being released in the near future, so fans need to stay tuned to the pretzel maze that is Steely Dan's formula. After they taste and feel the new music, there may be new and updated Pretzel Logic for us all...you just never know with Becker and Fagen and that is just fine for this fan. Just enjoy the music, don't feel like it all has to be figured out. Dance, have some fun, all logic dissipates when that curtain rises for a Steely Dan live performance and thank goodness for that in life!
