Steelers' Troy Polamalu criticized for promoting far-left anti-fracking film

Published January 11, 2012, 11:00 AM

As described in an article by Liz Klimas for Glenn Beck's news website, The Blaze, Pittsburgh Steelers superstar safety Troy Polamalu has promoted a far-left anti-fracking movie on Facebook. Polamalu, of course, now has a lot of free time on his hands, courtesy of the Steelers' 29-23 overtime loss in the playoffs Saturday night to Tim Tebow's Denver Broncos.

According to Klimas's article, "Steelers Safety Troy Polamalu Stirs Controversy for Recommending Anti-Fracking Movie":

While the Pittsburgh Steelers may still be nursing wounds from Sunday‘s upset by the Denver Bronco’s, prominent Steelers safety Troy Polamalu is still stirring controversy for a film recommendation he made on Facebook back in December. The movie? “Gasland.”

Gasland is a 2010 documentary film by Josh Fox covering the environmental hazards of natural gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing, a method that involves drilling into rock and injecting a high-pressure liquid to create channels for natural gas in reservoirs below to be harvested. Gasland features environmental concerns over fracking taking place in the Marcellus Shale under parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia, and also speaks with homeowners affected by fracking in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Texas.

Additionally, according to Klimas's article:

Since Dec. 14, Polamalu’s post has garnered 560 likes, 104 shares and more than 150 comments. Most comments are praise and thanks for Polamalu raising awareness of this issue, but the post is also peppered with criticism for the movie and misinformation about fracturing.

Plenty of commenters to The Blaze were critical of Polamalu. Among comments left to Klimas's story were the following:

"savinourliberty ": " Hey Troy, have you done your homework on this movie? All that gas that they show that 'contaminated' the water, was biogenic, meaning it was naturally in the water. Do your homework. "

"Ironmaan": "Windmills do more damage to the environment by killing birds than fracking ever could. It seems to me that any fuel that is cheap and would strengthen the US will be opposed by those that wish to redistribute wealth. … Get this through your freaking heads! There is ZERO data to show that fracking has any effect on ground water. None! So Troy… do your homework before you open your mouth."

"ConservativeQtee": "Troy Polamalu Does PSA With Obama, Hangs Out At White House…Nuff said."

"carbonyes": "Another crock of bull$h!t being spun out by the liberal left, courtesy of Al Gore, George Soros, Leo Gerard, to name a few, who are Hell bent to destroy this country, the middle class and the American way of life, while making millions and some cases, particularly where Al and George are concerned, billions, while our country, not theirs, continues to slide down the slippery slope into oblivion."
